Terraces in Amsterdam
Terraces in Amsterdam are one of a kind. As you might know, all the chairs are usually pointed in the same direction. No this isn’t a weird style choice, it is all done to accommodate the collective hobby of the Dutch: people watching. At squares and in narrow streets most chairs are pointed towards the passing public and whilst sitting and enjoying a drink, everyone is just looking at the people passing by. You might find this a bit odd ad first, but we do encourage you to try it… It’s a lot of fun! Wondering where you can do this best? Below we have listed a couple of the best terraces in Amsterdam.
Our favorite terraces in Amsterdam
Obviously, you can just pick a square and sit on a terrace, if you are just there for the people watching nothing else really matters. However, if you are also interested in some great finger food and drinks we have a couple of suggestions. Every year as spring eases in to summer, urban areas around Amsterdam transform into city “beaches”. BovenNEMO (‘above NEMO’) sits on top of NEMO Science Centre on Amsterdam’s largest roof terrace. There are lounge chairs lining the terrace next to sand pits, giving it the beach feeling. Entrance is free! So you can come and go as you please, it is the perfect place to spot locals and tourists alike. Cobra café is an illustrious café, named after the avant-garde movement from the early 50s and has the best and most inspiring view of Museum Square. Sit here with a cup of coffee or a light lunch and watch the city life pass by. Centrally located in Vondelpark you can find Blauwe Theehuis, this beautiful building from the 1930s is one of the best places to enjoy simple but tasty lunch dishes, beer, wine or a cup of coffee on the terrace overlooking the lush greenery of the famous park.
