Van Loon's Coach House
After a two-year-long renovation, the canal house museum Van Loon celebrated the opening of the coach house that is situated at the back of the garden of the museum.
Historic unity On 22 September 2011 - both the birthday of Professor Maurits van Loon (1923 - 2006), founder of the museum, and the anniversary of the museum itself - the restoration of the coach house was completed. With it, the historic unity of canal house, garden and coach house was restored.
Original layout The restoration of the coach house makes the Museum Van Loon the only place in the Netherlands to make a representative canal house in its original extent and layout accessible to the public; there are few places where the design of the Amsterdam canal system is as evident as here.
Impressive collection of carriages The coach house, just like the main house, was designed in 1672 by the then well-known architect Adriaan Dortsman. The Van Loon family had a great passion for horses, owning one of the most impressive collections of carriages in the country. On show are the original carriage housing, a tack cabinet displaying the original harnesses and, alternating, the historical carriages, harnesses and horse-sleighs of the family.
