Yearly events you shouldn’t miss
With so many events it is hard to keep track of the ones you shouldn’t miss. That is why we have carefully compiled a list of all the yearly must-visit events.
April 27th Amsterdam is orange! Every year about one million people come to the city to celebrate the king’s birthday. It is the worlds biggest street party. If you are in the city around the 27th don’t forget to pack some orange, you do want to participate in this event. Previously this celebration was on the 30th of April, but with the coronation of the king the day moved to go with his actual birthday.
Late July and early August it is time for the most well-known event in the city; gay pride. With the colorful canal parade and festivities all over the city it is the place to be for everyone who wants to celebrate love and LGBTQ+!
The various summer festivals
Summer in Amsterdam means many outdoor festivals. From music festivals to food festivals, almost every weekend will have a new festival in the summer months. Don’t forget to pack your umbrella’s though, weather stays unpredictable in the Netherlands.
Amsterdam Light Festival
From December until January the city is covered in creative lights during the Amsterdam Light Festival. At night you can walk, bike, paddle or take a canal cruise to admire all the beautiful artwork that is placed in the city.
Tulip Picking Day
21st of January is Tulip Picking Day. Is there anything more Dutch than tulips? On this day the tulip growers build a big field of tulips right on Dam Square. Here you can come and pick a free bouquet of Tulips!
Vondelpark Open-Air Theater
From May until September the famous Vondelpark will also have an open-air theater. During these months there will be various free performances for everyone to enjoy.
The second weekend of September is for everyone who wants to see very old monumental buildings. It is the only time a year that these buildings are open to the public. You will have a chance to look inside luxurious canal houses, castles, palaces, old farmhouses and factories.
Open Garden days
One of Amsterdam’s best kept secrets are the beautiful gardens that are behind some of the canal houses. But the third weekend of June you can come and see these gardens for yourself. All kinds of buildings all over town open their private gardens for everyone to see. You can even take a guided canal tour that will take you from one garden to another.
